Arizona State University Medicinal Plants in Canada PPT

Description

Make sure you can translate project to french with https://www.deepl.com/translator/files and send both versions

MODULE 4: BENEFICIAL PLANTS

For the summary of module 4, you will have to build a herbarium with different types of plants.

Your herbarium will have to identify 5 plants found in Canada that have medicinal properties and that are used either in Aboriginal culture and/or in traditional medicine.

You will also have to demonstrate your understanding of the different tissues and structures of flowering plants, the different transport mechanisms involved in the transport of raw sap and elaborated sap.

Use the roadmap to document your research process and the adapted grid to ensure that you meet all the requirements of the task.

If you wish, you can also watch the following video in which I comment on the adapted evaluation grid for this project.

You will find several virtual herbarium sites on the Internet with information on different plants.

Here are some sites that could help you start your research:

Herbier du Québec

Musée canadien de la nature

Herbier Louis-Marie – Université Laval

MODULE REFLECTION QUESTION

Plants: Essential to the Health of All Living Things?

  • MODULE SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT TASK

Create a virtual herbarium for use by amateur botanists. Collect Canadian medicinal plants. Publish your virtual herbarium to share your key findings.

  • DESCRIPTION

Which plants have medicinal properties? Where can you find them?

Create a virtual herbarium, for the use of amateur botanists. Collect Canadian medicinal plants.

  • Here is a roadmap to help you remember the various items to collect for your vignette. Remember to follow the steps and document your work.   Look at the adapted evaluation grid – M4 to make sure you complete everything.

Step 1: Planning

Discover Canadian medicinal plants by completing the exploration trails in the module and choose five (5) different ones to include in your virtual herbarium.

Formulate questions about these plants, such as:

What is the structure of the plant tissues that make up these plants like?

What is their transport mechanism?

What is the difference between monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants?

What factors influence the growth of medicinal plants?

What is their contribution to environmental sustainability?

What role do these plants play in traditional indigenous cultures?

Hypothesize how the plants in your herbarium are used in medicine and pharmaceuticals.

Gather information, in print and electronic media, about the structures, functions, reproductive methods, and factors affecting the growth of the medicinal plants you have chosen to include in your herbarium.

Step 2: Research

  • Conduct detailed research on the general characteristics of a vascular plant:
  • Demonstrate the distinctions between a monocot and dicot plant

Describe the structure of plant tissues according to their function in different systems.

Explain the transport mechanisms in vascular plants (aspiration, capillary action, transpiration, cohesion).Identify the factors that influence plant growth.

  • Explain how plants contribute to the environmental sustainability of an ecosystem.
  • Conduct detailed research about each of the plants you have chosen.
  • Conduct detailed research about each of the plants you have chosen.
  • Find the information below for each of the plants you have chosen:
  • French and Latin names of the species;
  • family name of the species
  • photo;
  • morphological characteristics that allow you to identify it;

use in traditional medicine or modern pharmacology;

possible techniques of asexual reproduction for duplication;

Ideal growing conditions for this plant (e.g., soil type, nutrients, temperature);

location of the reactive principles (therapeutic chemical molecules) in the plant (e.g., in leaves, roots, stems, flowers, fruits)

technique(s) for extracting the active ingredients (therapeutic chemicals) from the plant;

  • indications that the plant is monocot or dicot
  • status of the plant under the Endangered Species Regulation 230/08;
  • Tips for collecting;
  • means of protection and conservation;
  • Rating, on a scale of 1 to 5, of the future status of this plant and the rationale for your rating

news about medical advances related to the plant (if any).

Gather empirical data or select information based on specified criteria (e.g., relevance, expected output, reliability of sources, currency).

  • Step 3 : Analysis et interpretation

Assesses the reliability of the information collected.

  • Analyzes and synthesizes the information collected (e.g., processes data, selects specimens, develops ideas).
  • Creates detailed fact sheets for each of the selected plants.
  • Draw a conclusion, based on your research, about the medicinal properties of the plants included in your virtual herbarium (e.g., properties recognized by Aboriginal peoples, by botanists, by scientists).
  • Demonstrate, using examples, the importance of medicinal plants to current medicine and pharmacology.
  • Step 4 : Communication
  • Present the information you have gathered from your fieldwork and literature searches in the form of a virtual herbarium.
  • Choose the most appropriate publication format (e.g., website, infographic).
  • Communicate your ideas using the correct plant terms.
  • Publish your virtual herbarium in a location designated by your teacher.
