The company I work for felt that we should have an open, inviting waiting room, rather than the glass barriers we had before. The front desk team argued that it was difficult to keep patient confidentiality while they discussed medical care on the phone with patients in the waiting room without the glass separation, even with the use of waiting room music. The staff also fear patients’ aggression and illness. Despite these concerns, the remodel went as planned. Less than 2 years later, we were all creating the glass partitions, makeshift barriers, and protocols to keep our patients and our staff safe from COVID-19.
