Park University Unit 3 Experience Minority Status Discussion and Literature Review

Unit 3: Discussion

Experience Minority Status

Given the right social conditions, anyone can be either part of the majority or the minority. Your task this unit is to experience what it is like to be a minority. Think of all the different visible social groups to which you belong: gender, race and lifestyle are the most obvious categories, but there are others (such as “hippy” versus “biker” versus “preppy”).

Identify a place or situation in which you are a visible minority; for example a man in a lingerie store or day spa, or a woman at a classic car show or free weight room of the gym. Use your imagination! Identify a situation in which you are definitely out of place and everyone will know it. Once you have selected a situation, spend at least 30 minutes as a minority in that environment. Unless you feel you regularly experience being a minority and can clearly explain one of those experiences, please don’t just imagine one from the past but actually seek out a new situation where you will have the full experience of being treated like and responded to as a minority.  If you’ve had the unfairness of experiencing that a lot in your life then please describe that in detail to help educate the rest of your classmates who have not had that experience.

Reflect on your experience. How did you feel? How did others react to you? What stereotypes exist concerning your minority group? Did you experience prejudice or discrimination? To what extent did your experience reflect the research concerning stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination?

Grading

To earn the full 15 points, you must complete three important parts in a timely manner and the high quality work must consist of clear, complete, and insightful responses. Originality and creativity in your responses are encouraged. (See Grading and Rubrics for the Discussion Rubric.)

In both your own example and your response posts cite and reference at least one empirical source to support your opinion.  The kinds of principles you might highlight are virtually endless, but for example you might point out the “us and them” mentality, stereotyping, discrimination, attribution biases, belief confirmation, etc.  The purpose of the discussion thread is to deepen your understanding of the theoretical principles covered in this course and how they play out in real-life human interactions so we can become more self-aware.

Stereotypes in Our Culture

Directions

For this assignment I want you to identify stereotypes you have observed or experienced.  We are bombarded and accept stereotypes on a regular basis often without thinking about them or being fully aware of them.  Everywhere we  look we can observe and often experience gender, racial, ethnic, vocational, age, physical appearance stereotypes, etc.  These stereotypes are propagated by the media, books, coworkers, family members, our own assumptions and beliefs, etc.

Identify two stereotypes you’ve observed or experienced. To help identify good examples I suggest you watch some commercials, watch a TV show, or walk through a store while focusing on identifying stereotypes.  Ask friends or family members to give examples of stereotypes they’ve experienced or observed. Your paper will consist of a separate section for both stereotypes you identify.  For each one describe:

1. the stereotype

2. the beliefs or assumptions on which the stereotype is based

3. what’s inaccurate about the stereotype

4. why you think the stereotype persists

5. what effect the stereotype has on the people who are stereotyped

6. what effect the stereotype has on society

7. what small steps you think can be taken either on a personal or societal level to begin to change the prevalence of the stereotype

8. how you have been impacted either directly or indirectly by this stereotype

Select Three Peer-Reviewed Studies

In this unit, you will complete the following steps of the literature review:

  1. Conduct a literature search for studies that address your target question.
  2. Select three peer previewed studies that you will summarize in Unit 4.

What is a Literature Review

The purpose of a literature review is to express to your reader the knowledge and ideas that have been established on a topic. Your literature review should describe the strengths and weaknesses in the literature on the topic you have chosen. The literature review must be defined by a guiding concept (e.g., your research question). The literature review is NOT just a descriptive list of the material available, or a regurgitation of the summaries will write in preparing your research.

A literature review must do these things:

  1. Be organized around and related directly to your research question
  2. Synthesize and organize results
  3. Identify trends or findings
  4. Identify areas of disagreement
  5. Formulate questions that need further research

Study the example Literature Review provided for help in preparing to write your literature review:

Unit 3 Tasks

1. Conduct a Literature Search

If you need help with finding the right journals, the links will help you get started using the databases at Park University: Psychology: Finding ArticlesLinks to an external site.

2. Select Three Peer-Reviewed Articles

Next, select three peer-reviewed studies that reinforce your earlier studies, present a different perspective, or highlight areas of disagreement.

Select carefully. You should have looked up and reviewed many peer-reviewed studies from which you choose the ones that best support your research question.

Upcoming Literature Review Assignments

Journal

This unit complete a personal reflection in your journal. Remember, your personal reflection does not need to be lengthy; you are only required to write one paragraph (although you are welcome to write more if you would like).

The journal should:

  • Relate the dynamics of the social theories, concepts, and processes we cover each unit to your life.
  • Use the principles to better understand a reaction you had to a particular situation or person, analyze the behavior of someone else, evaluate the dynamics of a situation, group or organization you interacted with, etc.
