View the National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards (CLAS) categories aimed at equity and quality care (HHS, n.d.). Notice how these standards overlap with many of the expectations and standards in professional nursing practice!

  • In what ways are you and your peers using these standards in your areas of nursing practice?
  • Discuss one nursing action you might incorporate to improve cultural competence in your organization.

I will also need one reply to two classmates, here are their discussion response:

Tacara: The purpose of CLAS standards, also known as Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Service Standards, is to advance excellent care for patients from a variety of racial, social, and cultural backgrounds. By developing a leadership model focused on health, the standards hope to eradicate, advance and improve health care disparities. By conveying patients’ requirements, practitioners employ CLAS standards as a governance principle to advance the workforce. However, I make use of the improved CLAS standards to direct group initiatives aimed at raising the standard of care by assisting practitioners in addressing various health inequities through careful planning and interventions. Practitioners are highly encouraged to incorporate CLAS strategies to advance quality health care in the United States (Stalter & Mota, 2018). CLAS standards are integral in the post-COVID-19 global pandemic because it helps practitioners advocate for patientsÂ’ needs.

There are a number of potential methods that nursing practice that might enhance cultural competence, including developing programs aimed at addressing cultural competence in health education, practice, and care policy. Statistics confirm that the lack of linguistically and culturally appropriate services is the main contributing factor to health disparities; thus, an urge is to address such matters (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2016). The tool kit for many health care organizations aims at assisting health institutes such as clinics, hospitals, and local health departments in implementing the CLAS standards in their organizations to address health disparities that hinder the delivery of quality care (Porter-O’Grady, 2018). On the other hand, the CLAS standards include a broad cultural and linguistic approach that constitutes an integral factor in promoting quality care delivery (Stalter & Mota, 2018). Likewise, encouraging patient

tara:Hello class and Professor,

The goal of the National CLAS Standards is to advance health equity, enhance quality, and aid in the eradication of healthcare inequities by providing health and healthcare organizations with a guide to the principal benchmark. Delivering practical, equitable, understandable, and respectful treatment and services that are sensitive to varied cultural health practices, preferred languages, communication needs, and health literacy. I believe that my peers and I use these standards in the nursing practice.

One Nursing intervention would be to incorporate and improve cultural competence in my organization would be to join online chat rooms and social networks. Everything today is social media, Twitter, tic toc’s, Facebook Instagram, etc. I think that online networking and social media can significantly improve nurses’ perceptions of their own cultural competency and understanding, as well as keep them informed about current cultural competency challenges. I would also Improve communication and language barriers. Language is the key to accessing a culture since the values, ideas, and worldviews of a given cultural group are based on how that group uses language.

Interventions to improve cultural competency is defined as those that aim to: improve the accessibility and effectiveness of health care for people from racial/ethnic minorities by increasing awareness, knowledge, and skills of health care providers or patients as well as modifying policies and practices of organizations (Truong 2014). Nurses can deal with patients more skillfully if they recognize the individuality of each patient. To form meaningful connections with patients, nurses must be able to understand their beliefs, values, and needs. These interventions could help to improve cultural competence in any organization.
