Software Metrics

The purpose of this case study is to give you experience performing a software cost estimate.

You will be provided with the requirements for a small, new software application. You will also be provided with a file

“General Systems Characteristics”.

Based on the information from the software requirements, determine the volume of data

processing capacity of the application using function point analysis. Estimate the cost to deliver

this software using a forecast cost of $400 per function point. Log your accounting work onto an

Excel file. For this exercise, the file must include a “Documentation” worksheet and an

“Analytics” worksheet which contains your accounting work to justify the function point count.

No graph is necessary.

Prepare a standard PowerPoint presentation of your work to both derive the cost estimate and

justify your cost estimate. Your audience is the CIO who is very knowledgeable about software

metrics.
