The term used to label processes that use oxygen is aerobic.
The opposite of this term is anaerobic, where functions are performed without the presence of oxygen. Many biological reactions exhibit anaerobic tendencies. Fermentation, lactic acid accumulation, and some bacterial reactions take place without the use of oxygen (although most anaerobic reactions are not as efficient as aerobic reactions).
Aerobic respiration is beneficial to many processes. The electron transport chain involved in cellular respiration requires the presence of oxygen in order to function. If body (somatic) cells did not use oxygen, the energy produced by each cell would be 1,800% less efficient (36 ATP per glucose molecule to 2 ATP per glucose molecule).
