My life experiences have brought me across the paths of many people in different social aspects as well in my community. In all of these areas, as we observe physical, emotional, and social interactions, deficits and abuse can be apparent. In the hospital setting, when we observe uncleanliness, poor nutrition, anxiety, emotional distancing, or apparent financial hardships in the elder population, we need to question and investigate our patients’ home situations. Only 1 in 24 cases of elder abuse is reported to be identified, this is a staggeringly low statistic (Makaroun, et. al., 2020). In cases of a child, domestic, or elder abuse, a common denominator is often the presence of an adult who answers all the questions for the patient, does not leave the patient alone with health providers, and who may handle all the finances for the domestic partner or elderly patient. In children, unexplained injuries, fearful attitude, or stiffening of the body when approached by his/her caregiver, can raise awareness of possible abuse. The covid pandemic has impacted caregivers and older adults, as well as children, adding stress and further limiting support to those in need, causing increased burdens, and heightened incidents of abuse (Makaroun, et. al., 2020). In our facility, we have a well-documented chain of command to report suspected abuse, with important policies in place. Supporting evidence is conveyed to the primary Doctor and to our manager. This manager confers with the leadership. We have an office and panel of interdisciplinary team members who meet and review and address the abuse and work with local and state officials and departments. As health care workers we are all mandatory child and dependent adult abuse reporters, and we must report this abuse in 24 hours. In my facility I also have mandated educational requirements for child and dependent abuse every 5 years. Reference Makaroun, L. K., Bachrach, R. L., & Rosland, A. M. (2020).
