Introduction

Carefully read the Pineridge Quality Alliance: A Case Study in Clinical Integration and Population Health, Case # 4 located on page 53 in Darr, Farnsworth, & Myrtle’s Case book. In this case study, a new CEO urges his board to move toward becoming an accountable care organization and promoting regional population health, which demands choosing among three common approaches to navigating the challenges and opportunities of developing a clinically integrated network. This case study profiles the history, challenges, and opportunities related to development of a clinically integrated network and the sponsoring organization’s quest to become an accountable care organization and engage in managing population health.

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • ULO #4: Evaluate the difference in perspectives on the value of a clinically integrated network between the various stakeholders—patients, physicians, hospitals, and insurers (CLO 2 and 7)
  • ULO #5: Explain environmental forces causing healthcare organizations to clinically integrate, organize accountable care organization, and embrace population health strategies. (CLO 3, 4, 6, and 7)

  7. How would you prioritize and operationalize PQA’s proposed 2017-2019 goals?
  8. You have been assigned by the PQA board to analyze the network’s readiness to participate in CMS-sponsored ACO programs. What criteria can be used to determine its rediness?
