1. Fred is a nonexempt employee. He commutes 10 miles from home to his job each day. Fred has worked four days (32 hours) this week. On the last day of the week, after working for 6 hours at his regular job site, Fred is sent to another site operated by his firm. The trip between facilities takes him 90 minutes. At the new site, Fred works an additional 2 hours and then drives directly home. The new site is 50 miles from his home. (a) Is Fred entitled to any overtime pay for the week? Why or why not? (b) Should he be compensated for his trip from the new site to his home since the new site is farther away from his home than his regular work site? Why of why not?
2. Sarah has just joined the company after receiving her bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from a major university in Alabama. Sarah was a good, but not exceptional student. Because she is new to the organization, she is being assigned to work with some senior technicians so he can learn the business. She has been told that she will get involved in the engineering aspects of the job once she understands the operation. Most of Sarahs time is spent accompanying the technicians, observing their actions, and helping them carry out their responsibilities. She also spends a great deal of time copying documents and drawings. Sarah has a salary of $48,000 per year. Should Sarah be classified as exempt or non-exempt? Why or why not? What are the legal and ethical issues involved in this decision?
